Curriculum Intent

At Churchill CE Primary School, we have chosen to use the Jigsaw scheme of work to underpin the PSHE curriculum. The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all, age appropriate and has a clear progression through the primary years and beyond. As a result of this they will have the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, confident, independent, productive lives and meet their full potential.

We aim to encourage our children to be the best version of themselves that they can be and our PSHE curriculum allows children to achieve this, so that they can become informed, active and responsible citizens of the future.

Curriculum Implementation

All PSHE teaching takes place in a safe and respectful learning environment, where we encourage children, with kind hearts and minds, to actively engage in good quality and open minded discussions, confidently take opportunities to ask questions and to reflect upon the learning that has taken place.

A weekly lesson of 45 minutes in EYFS – Year 2 is delivered by the class teacher. In KS2, a weekly lesson of 1 hour delivered by the class teacher.

A typical lesson includes:

  • Opportunity to express views and opinions
  • Revisit prior learning as each general strand is covered in different age appropriate ways in each year group
  • Opportunities for open ended questioning
  • Engaging in good quality and open minded class discussions
  • Reflect upon the learning that has taken place
  • children working individually on a task, in pairs or in a small group

Learning environment is crucial in PSHE lessons to support the learning and teaching of PSHE – safe and respectful. Each class has their own cuddly jigsaw piece to reinforce taking turns to speak, to allow everyone the right to be heard in accordance with the Geneva UN convention of human rights. Each class establishes a safe, open and positive learning environment based on trusting relationships between all members of the class, adults and children alike, by devising their own Jigsaw Charter of ground rules, which are reinforced with every puzzle piece. The Jigsaw Charter includes the following aspects:

Take turns to speak

Use kind and positive words

Listen to each other

Have the right to pass

Only use names when giving compliments or when being positive

Respect each other’s privacy

Jigsaw PSHE directs our aim on developing the “whole child” through a spiral curriculum approach to developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas (puzzle piece) of;

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Curriculum Impact

As part of the ongoing teaching and learning process, teachers assess children's understanding through a range of Assessment for Learning strategies. Each strand has an assessment lesson at the end to assess children’s understanding. Each lesson has a formative assessment activity that children can use to self/peer assess their understanding in that lesson.

By the time children leave our school they will:

  • have a ready willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere.
  • have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships.
  • have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society.
  • have a strong self-awareness, interlinked with compassion of others.
